Museum Adventure with TOYBOX!

The Winnipeg Foundation’s Summer Internship Program gave TOYBOX the opportunity to connect with other non-profit organizations across the city, and one of those was the Dalnavert Museum! Hephzibah, with TOYBOX was able to connect with her fellow intern at the Dalnavert Museum and TOYBOX got to attend the museum’s “Second Saturday” event on September 12th. While visitors enjoyed free admission to the museum and historic house, TOYBOX welcomed them afterwards to some fun and learning-filled activities!

We made a handout that included a series of activities that families could do together in the museum, including “Where are the Shapes?” a numeracy activity where children are encouraged to point out shapes they recognize, great for a museum with tons of unique furniture and rooms! Also included was the literacy activity “Picture Talks” which encourages families to describe what they see in photographs, paintings and other art! Another great way to stay engaged throughout a museum, while practicing some descriptive words!

Inspired by the museum’s memorable stained-glass windows, we created a colour-by-number sheet for families to work on together that included Litty, Welly and Nume visiting the museum! A fun way to relax together after navigating the museum and practice some colours and numbers. We also had some Tangram activities where children could assemble the shapes to make some museum-inspired objects like a teapot, a house and a candle, or any combination that they could think of!

On their way out, we offered some glitter tattoos and a TOYBOX deck of cards to take home! It was great to introduce the project to so many families visiting the museum. Huge thanks to the Dalnavert Museum for inviting us to their event!
