TOYBOX at St. George School Numeracy Night!

On January 22, the TOYBOX Team, along with our math buddy, Nume, visited St. George School to provide four engaging numeracy activities for children. Four classrooms were set up with different numeracy learning stations: Number Card, Dice Game, Number Line, and Money Talk.

Parents and children were welcomed at each station with a TOYBOX Passport Card, where they could collect stickers after completing each activity. Many children in Grades 1─6 brought their younger siblings to join in the fun, while parents participated alongside their children. At each station, a free hard-copy pamphlet explaining the activity was provided, allowing each child to bring the playful experience home and share the activities with friends or family members.

(1) Number Card Activity by Trisha

I had an amazing time playing games with students ages 4─12. It was fascinating to witness children learn through the simplicity of card games. They were eager to create patterns based on colours, numbers, and our TOYBOX character face cards: Nume, Welly, Litty and Happy. In addition, they were motivated to add and subtract numbers using the number cards. This was a great way to introduce parents to play-based learning, showing that learning can be fun, amusing, and educational all at once!

(2) Dice Game Activity by Camryn

It was so much fun to play Number BINGO with so many families at Numeracy Night! Together, with the help of the teachers at St. George School, we explored all levels of the Dice BINGO activity!

(3) Number Line Station by Yeong

Children created their own number line while appreciating the importance of the number zero in our lives! When younger children were unsure where to place a number card, older siblings kindly helped, adding a special sense of teamwork to the activity. The best part was when everyone got to jump like frogs along the number line we made!

(4) Money Talk Station by Sofia & Sara M.

Everyone became TOYBOX bankers, playing with different coins and learning how money values work. We turned the activity into a fun little quiz, asking questions like how many 5¢ coins we would need to make 10¢, or how we could build 25¢ using 10¢ and 5¢. We loved holding the giant coins and imagining what we could buy with $1 or $2. Nume was especially excited about buying blueberry-flavoured ice cream!

Our special friend, Nume, was also invited to this Numeracy Night and was thrilled to interact with so many new children! Nume’s helper and best friend, Callie, introduced Nume to each child, asking if they wanted to play a mini math game together!

I had the privilege of roaming the hallways and classrooms with our mascot, Nume, throughout the event. Some children were afraid at first, but they quickly realized that Nume was a friendly giant who wanted to play and have fun! We had children showing Nume different numbers of fingers, counting with Nume, and playing Nume Says (our version of Simon Says) using numeracy knowledge. They high‑fived down hallways and even followed Nume into different rooms. It was so fun to see their happy smiles and interactions with our mascot.

—Callie

We truly appreciate this meaningful invitation and thank all St. George School teachers and staff who were actively engaged in supporting each station, helping create special moments and delivering playful math experiences to children and their families.
