Recognition in Reading
What Can You Learn From Books? 

Beginner

Read a picture book. Identify different pictures using the object’s name or description.

Tip: Say, “Point to the bee!” or “Show me the purple flower!”

Intermediate

 Point out letters and words in the book.

Tip: Say, “Point to the word cat,” “Show me the letter B,” or “What letter is this?”

​

Experienced

Name and spell words from the book once finished reading. 

Tip: Say, “Spell truck” or “Spell tire” if the book was about trucks.

Why is this important?

Connecting letters and pictures to the corresponding words will strengthen a child’s literacy abilities.
