Number Lines & Ladders

Number Lines show positive and negative integers horizontally, on either side of zero.

Number Ladders are a vertical version of a number line.

Number lines are a visual representations of infinite whole numbers, fractions and decimals, and positive and negative integers, evenly spaced on a horizontal line.

They can be used to learn the order of numbers, as well as to add, subtract, and skip count.

The spacing between numbers does not matter, however leaving large enough spaces between each whole number allows you to visually represent halves and quarters like 1.25, 1.5, and 1.75 in between the numbers 1 and 2.

Number ladders work similarly, except that they are laid out vertically.

We use number ladders to read temperature with thermometers, to show the temperature above and below zero in both Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).
